Poll: Reset phantom timer by relog, rather than sleep

Post by Burger »

Yukarion has stated a few times that if the community can generally agree on a solution for phantoms, one will be implemented.

This is an idea which Yukar himself has expressed support for, and one which I feel would satisfy everyone.

The proposal is that the phantom timer should be reset by logging off and on again, rather than by sleeping in a bed (i.e. relogging would have the same effect that sleeping currently has). This is better than disabling them outright, as it still allows the collection of phantom membranes, while also solving the issues presented by phantoms.

Please vote, as a change will only happen if there is a sufficient consensus among the community.

100%, YES YES YES. Phantoms are an absolute nuisance for anyone at a group base and travelers. Hopefully this will alleviate these issues.

Why would you tie it to some arbitrary action and then force it on everyone on the server? People only support this because it kind of gets rid of phantoms, not because it's a good solution on how to do it. Anyone who wants membranes now has to wait an hour+ every time they log in or the server restarts, and will definitely be cancelling restarts to make sure they can get some (of course even at 10tps). And then the chat is going to look like this permanently:

xxxxxxx left the game
xxxxxxx joined the game
xxxxx left the game
xxxxx joined the game
xxxxxxxxx left the game
xxxxxxxxx joined the game
<clipchip> im not fat
xxxxxx left the game

I'm not going to vote in either direction on this.
I don't know how the code would work exactly, is it possible to only count "voluntary" logouts to count against the timer, so that forced kicks from restarts wouldn't reset it? Or is that all the same action in the code?

do we have a list of everyone who "wants membranes"?

this is a flawed half measure on the path to phantom-free bliss, however I will support it despite the join message annoyance.

To be completely honest, it wouldn’t be hard to code a command that allows this feature to be enabled. Literally like a command that would run “/phantoms” could enable the feature of relogging and having them go away, but needing to wait an hour just to get membranes because you logged out seems a bit far of a stretch.

Yeah exactly, there's no good reason to not have this as either a command you need to run hourly or just a toggle that turns them off until you type it again.
