after having used optifine a bit i do think it's unfair as you can do things like make water clear and remove the bedrock fog

These are convenience mods (minimap without a radar, inventory sorting, tool switching etc). Imo, even if they give some advantage, they can't be called cheating (they're far from that), and they are undetectable - that's why discussing whether we should ban people for them is pointless, because if we decide to do so, we'll just have a dead rule. And the more dead rules there are, the fewer f*cks are given for the rest of the law.

i prefer the zero mod policy. We seem to be going in a user discretion direction. The fact that we can't detect it isn't a good reason not to outlaw it. We can't detect xray one bit but that's still against the rules. I'd say if any one is dumb enough to brag about their mods or post pictures of using mods we should ban them. And if people don't want to get banned over the mods they use then they should keep their mouth shut about it.

I think kicking people the first week for the minimap mod would be a better strategy, then ban. People still think it's allowed. But yeah, if you have something that isn't in the vanilla game, you shouldn't be allowed to play here. notepad is just using strategy. that compass thing takes the fun out of using trigonometry to find the angle of where the position is in reference to your location.

i see ur point rev but as gnat said its useless to have a rule against something u cant prove/see. and i dont think its that big of an advantage. if only the ingame maps wasnt so useless

well can't we at least pretend it's against the rules so people don't keep telling all the newbs that it's okay to have it. Then perhaps use of it would deminish.

Well, here's a way to prove it. Have an admin appear in front of the player, and ask them to take a picture. If they edit it, it will be plainly visible, and if it is a different pic, the admin will not be in the picture.

Sure, but you can disable the minimap with a single keystroke. There are servers where using F3 is not allowed. What is even the point of rules like that?
