My guess to bases surviving close to spawn are that people aren't expecting that on an established server.

The other day we came through a nether gate at 5k, 5k and discovered that someone had the NERVE to build an above ground castle, complete with farms, spawners and chests filled to the brim. I mean, it was in the SKY for pity's sake. So much for being conspicuous. Seriously, guys, no matter how far out you are, no matter how isolated you think your base is, you can never be too safe.

Tunnel deep. Keep things simple.

This is an anarchy server after all, not creative mode. Self preservation and personal wealth above all else in this world. Good luck.

Yeah, I am continuously surprised (and delighted) when I find towers, castles, farms, etc all above ground, close to nether portals. I mean... really, keep it up! Mining is boring, stealing is so much easier. :)

That said, I am currently building a large-ish structure near spawn, because.. it's more challenging that way. My first base is so far out that I doubt anyone's grandchildren will find it, so I wanted a change of pace.

Yeah, that is exactly how I got rid of my cobblestone. Some of the buildings around spawn are mine, and some other got removed when we cleaned up the spawn.

Some new tips from what i've learned of 1.8 and hunger. Since you can die of hunger on this server getting food quick is key. Firt thing to try is walling up for the night and in the morning picking up rotten flesh and bones. If you get some bones make bone meal first to grow some grass for seeds then to grow quick wheat. You still need to focus on getting wood ASAP. You'll also want to hit up any abandoned mines they're good for wood and melon seeds. Melon production seems much more limited in 1.9 so i may not be a very good food to bother with but when you make a standing base it will be nice to have some seeds. From what I've seen of 1.9 you'll want to get a potion stand going quick you need to get a blaze rod from the nether fortresses. also get as many ender pearls as you can they will be helpful in finding strongholes and getting to the end.
