Finland has mandatory service because voluntary service isn't enough manpower. The US has a volunteer army of about 2 million. This is more than enough for our needs, so long as we don't get into a ridiculous conflict. The only reason I see mandatory conscription as "good" is in terms of it making people "less cowardly" and "more patriotic". And I'd have to see the latter being a good thing. I don't see why one should judge a country based on military conscription. The very act screams "my country isn't good enough unless we look at a very specific segment and judge our greatness solely on that". Finland is a wonderful country. It really doesn't need to be looked at in these terms; it has a lot of other good things as well. Your education system for one.

Or the government wants you to think that the people want to keep it that way.
