I really hope they're something different, because that's a horrific idea. whoever thought of it should be beaten senselessly
Raaaaage- Wasn't it me who thought of that idea? I remember suggesting it to pianiseemo early on and perhaps you got the idea of a honeypot from pianiseemo?
It would be quite strange if someone else and I both had the same technique of finding XRay and we both decided to name it "Honeypot".
When I did honeypots on a different server, I always made sure to check the mining shafts. If they dug straight down, no torches, directly to the chest, I'd ban.
If they seem to be branch mining and happen to stumble upon the chest, I wouldn't ban ban.
Either way not many people find joy in gigantic mine shafts near spawn so there isn't much wrong with honeypots- and please don't beat me senselessly! (Unless you mean that as in in-game, whereas I'd be happy to fight those who wish to)

I actually meant the guy who made the mod. It just seems VERY ineffective, and could easily cause false bans. If it had a "trigger" system (as in, nothing in the chest, but all admins would recieve a warning that someone opened it), I'd be for it, albeit only in the sense that "it doesn't affect me, so I'm indifferent".

A guy made a mod for this? As I said it would be quite strange if someone else had this idea and called it "Honeypot."
Yukar probably described it as an instant ban for an easier, more concise explanation.
Anyway when I first pitched the idea to pianiseemo, I talked about using BB with the chests so that you confirm that whoever stole from it deserves a ban, and then BB the chest to see who took from it.

Yes, there is a mod, I was first suggested to use it way back in ~1.4
The mod however is mostly designed to catch griefers, on places where griefing is not allowed (ie. you'd place a bunch of diamond blocks next to spawn, it would ban whoever breaks them)

well, when yukar talked about it, I assumed someone made a mod for that. Regardless, I think it's a bad idea, albeit good-intentioned

:( Guess I wasn't the first to suggest it.
I agree with pianiseemo that honeypots should be used, just not with that mod. BB is the most effective way to do it.

Wow lot's of thought on that but indeed a horrible idea. I once blew a hole straigt through to bedrock right by spawn for no reason at all i certainly couldv'r uncovered such a thing while making a random blast hole. and of coarse with six sides to a block that means 6 directions a random digger may stumble upon it from

Yeah, on the old map I had a habit of doing this as well as digging looooong straight tunnels starting at spawn and going outwards (y=12), found a solid amount of bases that way. Both would look suspicious to an outside observer tho.
Re: honeypot chests - I had previously placed one in the spawn area, my logic being that if I was invisible around spawn and saw someone frantically trying to dig for it, I could ask them about it. Never caught anyone, and I would never ban anyone just for digging there (chunk errors anyone?). Anyway, Yukar's against honeypot chests in general for understandable reasons, so that's gone.

I'd say that the situation with honeypots is comparable to the fellow on the appeal forums who recently got banned for XRay.
If someone removed the absolutely necessary blocks and nothing else to get to the chest, we can use the same logic for banning them here.
Mineshafts and such are perfectly reasonable for finding a chest, but unless we find a large amount of players who enjoy digging random 1x1 shafts straight down near spawn I'm not opposed to piani's idea.
However noting that Yukar has already decided against this I can agree it would be best to bring honeypots out of this discussion for now.
