Writing in capital letters means everything you said becomes invalid. ;-p
wannabe troll, flaming us by entering arbitrary words in capslock
Arguments:
- we want new players ( do we? )

pro
- surviving as a new player has become quite hard
- long-established players were not confronted with that level of challenge
- a starter chest will become a feature in minecraft soon, so its still vanilla
- we can expect good players to join us
- stops people from asking for free items
- this is primary PvP not PvEnvironment

contra
- surviving as new player is still easy
- giving free stuff will not be vanilla
- no help for noobs
- player could fill their stocks by killing themselves and restarting

If these are the arguments...

Of course, we don't want real noobs to play here. But those won't take the challenge either, even we gave them a stack of melons. And they won't survive griefing if they lack any skills and leave soon. So where is the problem?
But it is not the plan to give them everything. The plan is to give new players a very small base of items to compensate the increasing challenge of the devastated area, players before them did not have to overcome. You can say surviving is still possible, but it is not easy, and it is driving people away who are looking for interaction with other players like PvP. If we want new skilled players to join permanently, giving them something they could use to survive and to keep them here will be good.

Some suggestions:
As we plan to rebuild spawn it could be a good idea not giving them a fixed amount of items, but build something there they could use to earn those items. The villagers are a good way to implement this. Or there could be some kind of spawner usable only once per spawning players.

You seem to have forgotten the fact that giving noobs a starter kit would result in even more idiots at spawn attacking players for items. Also, as of your suggestion, they would have a food source and weapon.

I was gonna quote sol and cover his pros and cons but then i realized the whole list was wrong in the first place. A pro/con list should list effects that may occur with the proposed action. This however was a list of causes and a cause can't be a pro or a con only the outcome of the cause can be negative or positive. Excepting con: people will be able to die to get more stuff. This is not only an effect of the free stuff but a pretty bad one worth consideration.

So i'll just say don't do it, but if you must make it very limited, like 1 loaf of bread and maybe 1 sapling if you think wood is at all needed.

Rev, I'm not sure that I understand what you want to tell me. I just listet the argument (opinions) I, you and others mentioned here for (pro) and agains (contra) the idea. Maybe you could make a list or something matching your criteria for a pro/con list?

@chicken: Even more idiots at spawn attacking players for items with a food source and weapon would only be a problem for noobs, but not for experienced player you mentioned. So what`s the problem? If this would really happen - I don't think so - these idiots will leave soon.

And everything depends on what you give new players.

- Giving each player just a sampling (something you would have found at spawn en masse some months ago) would not give him an instant weapon. If there were more player, the have to fight and protect their tree.
- Giving each player unlimited food would fully help them to survive without giving anyone anything real making a difference in the future especially if it is flesh from a zombie.

There are other possibilies from creating a zombiespamer up to giving full equipment. What would be your opinion to give a player the possibility to get away from spawn?

Finally one can create a set of rooms a player has to get through in the protected spawn area making it impossible to collect multiple of the free items.

Pros and Cons of having a starter pack

Pros
Newbs stop bitching/asking stupid questions
Getting established is easier
possible increase in popularity/population

Cons
People dying over and over to stock up on free stuff
Caters to players that aren't any good any how
Players will become dependent on charity

See these are all effects that would happen if this plan were used. Your list was just..... I don't know weird and even contradictory you said not vanilla is a con and vanilla is a pro.

That's because someone stated it would be non-vanilla to give someone items from start, and someone else stated, a starter chest will become part of the next version, so it will be vanilla. I didn't want to weight it, so I just collected them as the came up.

Making it a bit easier in some way is a good idea. But I think giving free stuff is just not the proper way to do it. Not on this server.

perhaps a cooldown? like, you can only have it every few hours, or so. would make it a "here's help, but don't fuck up" sort of shtick.
