How far would you recommend your base being out from spawn to be able to safely put a nether portal inside of your base?

xD I ran into it by accident, you were just unlucky. I'd say 50k will work if you don't have a portal up. 100k or more if you want to leave the portal up.

Make it so you need a fire res pot to get to the portal

That's stupid, then you need to make a seprate stash of said potions to get to the portal.

1) Make portal in base
2) Linked portal will spawn in the nether
3) Destroy the linked portal in the nether
4) Dig directly under where the linked portal was to Bedrock, seal the cavern above you
4*) Optionally, create this on the top of the nether instead of the bottom, assuming this portal is merely for resources and not a form of travel
5) Re-assemble the portal in the area of your choice
6) Even the area out, make good enough space around the portal
7) Travel back through to the Overworld
8) If all goes well and it was in nearly the same spot in X and Z, you should arrive back at the overworld.
9) Teleport again and see if you arrived at your Underworld portal you just set up.
10) If so, you now have a nearly undetectable way to the nether. Just make sure the area is sealed, looks natural, and lacks anything an X-rayer may be able to pick up, I.E any man-made blocks such as torches, crafting tables, furnaces, ect.
