Downtime

I just came home to find people complaining about lag.

I'm 99% sure I've found the problem, but it'll probably take me a bit to fix. Please expect 15-30 minutes downtime. I apologize beforehand.

I thought I had the problem, but apparently not. Gonna take it down again to let me work freely.

Okay, I think I found the problem. Removing the world/data folder caused the memory usage to drop to about 400MB.

I couldn't find any documentation on what the folder does (google just leads me to people asking where to find the minecraft APPDATA folder is,) but I think it's extra data about the world, mobs/dropped items probably. I'm gonna try looking through the files see if I can find anything abnormal, if anybody has any knowledge about this folder, please do tell.

Here's mine, from a fairly well lived in world (nothing like simplicity ofc but it's been up forever with 3-4 people on it):

Code: Select all

 Directory of G:\share\Minecraft\Beta\Hobbiton\data

28/09/2013 10:21 PM <DIR> .
28/09/2013 10:21 PM <DIR> ..
27/08/2011 03:39 PM 12 idcounts.dat
05/10/2011 09:13 PM 2,918 map_0.dat
08/06/2011 08:02 PM 1,141 map_1.dat
16/08/2011 02:28 PM 578 map_2.dat
28/08/2011 01:19 PM 635 map_3.dat

Mine's nearly identical, except we also have a Fortress.dat, and we have about 600 maps.

I really wonder why it would make it lag like that.

Probably poorly optimized java code.

Yukar had mentioned that the server was taking up 6 GB RAM at the time, which is way too much.

Did you get a stack dump or java core, Yukar? I'm pretty good with either.

Nuts. Ah well, probably one of the many bugs Mojang introduced to Minecraft with the 1.6.x updates.
