Have we gone soft?

The last time I participated in real pvp... months ago when the kinghills ambushed me at spawn. Then they all went to /world, and everybody was out for their blood. Everybody attacking them was buttmad at them for various reasons, but whatever. Thinking back, it was a lot of fun and excitement that this server has been lacking. I'm actually disappointed that they didn't stick around and wreak more havoc around the spawn area. That could have started a war between players who were actually decent pvpers.
But the most disappointing thing was everyone's reaction, including mine. I was upset for them killing me, taking my iron armor (wtf, I have an iron trench?). Others were accusing them of hacking, etc (and no wonder they haven't logged in since). Later reflecting on the whole thing, I realized that the individuals involved had little to do with it. It was really the server as a whole that has changed. Everybody has gone soft due to the lack of hostility.
There used to be people ambushing/ raiding each other all the time. Go to /world, and face no less than three to five people invisible, one to four in full diamond, and various others ready to gank you. Newbs that spawned were target practice. In general it was pretty unforgiving. Nowadays, there are trees planted at spawn, and we give out free food and gear to newbs. As if it wasn't easy enough.
Imagine that you're a new player. You see a server that says "Harcore Anarchy PvP". You log on and are greeted by a bunch of pansies handing out free food and gear. Oh, and what a nice looking spawn. Confused much? I would just leave.
Seriously though. I wish we would get back to our roots a little.

Called it, this is exactly the thing I've been trying to prevent.
We hugbox now.

We had a tough spawn for the past several months, it's only just recently we've started cleaning it up. Even then it's still very griefed, and food isn't that easy.
There was little pvp when the spawn was rough. Now at least we're beginning to see new people join.

Have you ever seen the spawn at 2b2t? It's nothing but a crater down to bedrock, yet there are still 15-30 people logged on at any given moment. There are scattered "newb zones" scattered about, but nobody tries to fix up the entire spawn. I survive and escaped the crater area my second try.
Plus all you have to do is kill a couple spiders and you have infinite fish. I don't get what's so hard about that.

All you need to do is get a carrot and you're set.
And all the new people are usually like ''du we haz sethome can i haz croaatoov'', ''hai doods join mah servooor da aipoo adroos is raid.shit.com'' and then there's the ''hai im from da planoot meencrooft can haz op?''

The reason we added the farm in spawn is too see how it would affect the numbers of players joining in. And this past few months, there were signs of new players stay a little longer, sometimes days, and compared to when it was before i think the server was pretty much empty.
You shouldn't compare 2b2t to our server. As you all know 2b2t has no rules, litterary unmoderated and players has the freedom to use 3rd party programs, that reason alone is why kids likes that server.
Now a days we are barely getting to see decent players who are looking for a challenging server like ours, last player i know was Wolfbitten and my theory is becasue they have already found a good server for them to dominate at. Another issue is that there are also many Vanilla, semi-vanilla servers out there which are maybe as good or even much better than ours.
So what about new players? How do we win them over? During the times when i moderate this server I have watched many new players play like what a normal minecraft noob do, most of them just run into the wild without tryng to harvest food from mobs becasue they dont see rotten flesh and spider eyes as useful as we think they are, and then they would ended up falling into holes or hide into one and starve or get killed by a mob as they might not have the experience on combat, they would then constantly do that again until they get tired and leave. I really like how the spawn prevented alot of noobs and annoying kids away over the past years but i think we have taken it for granted for too long, and now we are paying for it. I think we should think this through, personally i think we should give it a shot at "being soft" for a little awhile until the server has gotten more regular players on.

The new people that add value to the server (worth playing with/ talking to/ fighting with) aren't going to be bothered by a messed up spawn. Like Wolfbitten, who joined before all this "noob haven" nonsense, those people join for the challenge of playing on a rough server. The noobs who are given free stuff, of course will stay a little longer, but only as long as they can be successful at the game with no effort- i.e being freeloaders.
I don't know why anybody would want to play with noobs who constantly starve, fall into holes, etc. You know that they aren't going to end up adding value, aren't going to stay long so what's the point? Only thing they're good for is target practice.

I do see your point, and i appreciate players like wolf joining in the server and we admins do wish for more players like him, but realistically how many players like him do we get within lets say..a month? or 3 months? Since iQuint joined, we also had wolfbitten withing a few months but we haven't seen any new posible regulars since. Sure, what makes a good server is by having good players in it but what are the chances of someone looking for that? Many players in the past have asked about the numbers of players online in our server and they would soon or later leave after finding out that we get less than 10 players normally.
I think what makes a good server is the one that gives a good first impression, doesnt matter if they are freeloaders or complete newbs because eventually more players would join in as they will get an impression of a lively server with decend amount of players, rather than a server with sensible players but minor population.
And not to mention, we are also losing players due to the lack of active players this past several months. I've been hearing rumors about how this server resembles a "sinking ship", and to be honest i was bothered by it and i think something has to be done.

In your OP you seem to long after more fighting. That's not going to happen if we only get one new player every couple months.
