My completely unprofessional guess is that it will work, it's possible that it'll be slower than in singleplayer, but I think it'll work.

Given minecraft's shit code it will probably lag out and certain blocks will disconnect, rendering it trash.

Which they'll then make a half-assed attempt to fix in subsequent patches, breaking other mostly unrelated things in the process.

it might actually work in multiplayer servers, but im expecting some lag will be involved.

Well, it seems to work according to what Mojang has intended, so it's not a glitch. Flying probably won't make up for the slow speed.

it seems if they were to 'bug fix' it block update detector switches would have to go. As for slow speed, who the fuck cares, you could just leave it flying all day long. I'd like to use it to cross oceans with a horse. I wonder how much inventory space you need to carry all you need to build one.
