My alternative to a world boundary

Very simple: For every 2000 blocks further from spawn you get, you lose 1 maximum health. ie. if you're 1k blocks from spawn, you can have full health, if you're 3k blocks from spawn, your max health is 9, 3999 it's still 9, but 4000 it's 8, and so on up till 20k where it caps at 1, meaning if you go more than 20k blocks from spawn you only have 1 heart, and ofcourse it caps there so 22k would still be 1 heart.
This would make people rather want to stay near spawn, as you obviously get an advantage, and if you're more than 20k blocks from spawn you die in one hit, so people who want to make it to the security of being so far away have to be prepared to die a lot from monsters.
Like if you're near spawn monsters are a non-threat, but players are a huge threat, and if you're more than 20k blocks from spawn players are a non-threat but monsters are a huge threat, and if you're in the middle there's a chance of somebody finding your base, and monsters can kill you easier. So it's balanced out, no matter how far from spawn you are, you're at an equal disadvantage.

seems overly complex.

What's complex about you lose 1 health for every 2000 blocks you go?

Very odd but i'd be more supportive of this than a limit I'm near death all the time any how that's what beds are for

It's a interesting idea, but I don't really like it.
It's hell enough getting out that far. Personally that fact is going to deter people just as much as the health part.
I think it should be kept as is, no limits or anything. This is vanilla. And most likely this would drive people away. I'd rather have more people on the server than have it FEEL like there is more people.
And on that note if we don't plan on resetting for 1.9 (Which im glad we aren't) how are we supposed to find a portal to the end.
If a new feature comes along how are we supposed to find that?
Now thats more of a complaint for the limit, but it still is going to be hell to find anything new in the world if your health lowers and you die before you can do it.

I'd rather have more people on the server than have it FEEL like there is more people.
4 people online at a time (in total, obviously) is a lot of people? That's at least how it's been the past two weeks, server's been getting 30+ people this weekend, so hopefully it'll also get some more during the week.
Assuming more people aren't going to join tomorrow, there are so few people on the server that driving them away isn't really something I'm worried about.

meh, I think this is just as bad, if not worse, then the limit. If they add a limit, I'd be screwed as I'm more then 5k out, and I hate limits. (both calculus limits and otherwise) Adding a limit forces players to be MORE secretive, meaning they'll be less focused on interacting. Therefore, pvp (proportionally) will drop. This is vanilla anarchy, and your idea sounds very overly done. I want LESS mods, not more. if people wish to go 20k out, they probably don't want to interact with the spawn. And people will still be at spawn, just not those who trek out. limits kill the experience for me, as it makes the experience feel forced, rather then organic.

There is no pvp, how can it drop any further?
if people wish to go 20k out, they probably don't want to interact with the spawn
Obviously not, but it's this asocial attitude that's killing the server.
people will still be at spawn
Yes, new people who have just joined the server and will leave again in 5 minutes because there is no pvp. Meanwhile no person which is any challenge will be there.

Well with this server.... You have a hard time trusting other people, so the best way to get new peeps in is to get GROUPS of new peeps in.
I don't think I would have played here alone, but luckily I came with about 7 other guys that I know and trust some irl, some not.
I think the best bet here is just to have some sort of upvote system to get on the tops of server-lists and advertise it as it is.
The open-ness and the freedom should be enough to attract loads of players.

I wish it was that simple.
