So, I'm curious what the opinion on bringing back the old town would be, and adding spawn protection inside spawn again.

Here's my complete opinion on spawn. Aside fro being full vanilla (which is what i'd love myself but never get), I'd want it to be difficult but not impossible to re-enter the protected space. Any area with build protection should be PVP free. I've always thought that a safe spawn offering a spawn rat hang out was good for sever population. Many people leave because there is no one around when they log in. So, sure spawnrats are worthless, but they give newbs a feeling of activity, ergo the feeling that they have found a good popular server.
If you want to, however, just roll back to and old style spawn, I'd cast my lot in for the old map spawn with the four bridges.
side note: 1.3 may see an end to being able to push others out of spawn.

Problem with centralised spawn is, like your village Rev, that spawn rats may still hunt them down, when somebody will decide to leave the area, even the area by it self would be protected against griefing and pvp. However, maybe this is a better option than be shot/slash somebody in the water (as current). That would also mean, you would be able to trade with villagers after 1.3 update.
Is that an idea to get food at spawn from farms? quite few food there.
I agree with the fact that could make place looks more popular, which is good thing. I just try to thing about the way, to escape from spawn rats.
Anyway, I got mixed feeling about centralized spawn place.

are you saying this is a bad idea because there would be spawnrats fighting at spawn? Isn't that the thing we've been trying to get since that stupid limit idea? Maybe I'm wrong, after all i hardly understand anything you say. But it seems you are afraid of spawn rats. Which iis just stupid, it takes no effort to run away from people.
i want to mention we can't have a large protected zone people who join should be imidiately able to see the destruction so they know that they have arrived at a true griefing server. Also i didn't even think of the villiger trading. This would be a nice way for newbs to get stuff but not a too easy way as they need stuff to trade with. But if i remember spawn protection right mobs are killable at spawn so that would be short lived.

Couldn't we just have a regularly resetting unprotected spawn area? Since apparently everyone is trying to help the spawnrats, this would probs be the easiest way to do it. In other words, keep current spawn as a great Jesus trap, but have a certain area around it reset at regular intervals.

Rev, how about your map but with the walls changed to be more castle-like, the bedrock isn't particularly pretty.
So, the inside would be pvp-free, outside would be protected but with pvp, there will only be two entrances to the pvp protected area. So people can gank entrances easily, but you can exit anywhere.

At the moment, I think it is a good idea to bring back the old town - or anaother, and add spawn protection inside spawn again.

changing walls is fine by me. When i designed it i was just trying to keep with the old style platform. But WTF pvp in protected area! Have you never heard any of my complaints about that. PVP in protected areas is the bull shit that created the whole combat log bitching. Also i will repeat: If the protected area is too large people will quickly assume that this is not the anarchy server they expected. When i joined this server so long ago I almost left as soon as I joined because i spawned into a protected area. The only reason i stayed was because after a little rendering happened I was able to see the nearby destruction and lava towers. People should be able to see the waste lands looking out of spawn in any direction. Protected areas outside of spawn just confuse and irritate people there is no benifit to be had by it.

Well, the problem with having it that way is that it makes it either easy to re-enter spawn, or difficult to exit spawn.
If we make a wall, with the area around it griefed, then it will be difficult to leave spawn. If we don't make a wall, it won't be a challenge to re-enter (which I thought you wanted)
Personally I'm fine with not having a wall.

okay i see what you're saying but keep it small, just big enough to keep stuff safely away from the wall. A mote should be sufficient. I'd say go no bigger than 10 wide
