can't attack monsters?

I don't know what is happening, but I just got killed by a zombie because I couldn't hurt it. It could attack me, but no matter what I did the zombie wouldn't die. I don't know if this is a server thing or patch thing. I never had this problem in the past and I am on very fast internet. Any way I am wondering if I can get all the stuff back I lost when I died because I had a ton of experience and good loot.

Unkillable mobs?

Well it was worth a try at getting my stuff back. What is going on is that monsters like zombies won't take any damage from me swinging my sword at them. This happens with skeletons, zombies, spiders, etc. The monsters still are killing me while I try to kill them. So far the only thing that works is by logging off then back on again. I can then kill them.
