Hey mitte.. I was just tweaking lyser's very long and trollish nose. Linux has its ups and downs like any other OS. It will never, ever be suited for "common" desktop use for the person who wants their computer to work well with minimal knowledge -- do you want to have to be an expert on car transmissions, engines, brake systems, and electronics before you can drive one? I think not. Same for most people and computers.

Its ok for server use if you have a good support contract or a computer geek handy (or you are one). People who expect it to be "free" as in free to support and maintain are in for very rude surprises.

i disagree linux can very well be suited for common desktop use the problem right now is that most dev is fokusing on bleading edge tec, thats the most fun to make so its not strange that it is.
but there are dists that making a effort to polish up things, ubuntu is one of those sadly they fell for the bleading edge thing with their own shell and is now to complicated.
mint have taken up the flag and is doing a great job. have not been in any conf file other then apaches since i installed it a couple of month ago.

most windows users cant use the control panel anyhow and will ether buy a new or leave it at a sopport center if it breaks.
when i was helping my dad with his win8 system i could not even find the control panel XD.

mitte, you just prove my point. Your average user who uses the computer as a tool is not going to know about which distro is better or not or has issues with Flash or HTML5 or needs config tweeks or kernel recompiles for certain hardware or drivers or... the list is endless!!

It is not easy. What you think is easy, is not for the average person. Microsoft made a shitty OS that is very easy to use (and even then, only after they hired a bunch of OS coders from HP to make the NT kernel). Linux is a great OS that is harder to install, maintain, and use (in general -- I agree that earlier versions of Ubuntu were starting to feel almost as slick as Windows, then they dropped the ball).

Of course, MS is going backwards with Windows 8, so who knows what the future will hold.
