Anarchist purism aside, that also has the issue of making it harder to get noobs to team with each other. If one teleports to +3000 z and the other to -3000 z, there's no chance they'll meet up.
Same issue with Ultra's idea, I think. Any kind of random location system has the issue of separating noobs, and that's unavoidable. What we really need to do is gain a community of new players, not scattered noobs here and there.
Some benefits to just moving the spawn point like Matt suggested:
1) Barely changes the physical server at all
2) Encourages noobs to play while still leaving the server harder than 99% of servers
3) Not really at all un-vanilla

And what makes you so sure it won't attract new players? Seems pretty clear to me that better terrain = more noobs sticking around.

Ok, so I am noting that some people do not want spawn's location moved for the following reasons:
1) 0,0 is a central location
2) 0,0 has always been the spawnpoint for this server
3) It might not attract new players
4) It's complicated to move it (which I completely disagree with)
Are there any other reasons that those who oppose this idea can list?

I'm for the spawn being moved in order to help out some of the noobs who joined later than others who were here long before all the devastation that happened there. Now, I don't think we should put them in land that almost appears to be brand new, either. I believe that it would be most fair to have it placed within 500 blocks of the current spawn in a location that might not be perfectly ideal, like the mountains. They'll still struggle, but it won't be due to the huge holes we've made over the past three years. Most spawns in single player aren't even at or within 100 blocks of 0,0 when the world is generated, so why must ours? I'd like the spawn to be moved, I just don't want the server to become easy for new players.
I don't want it to be far from spawn, though. The last thing we need in a server like this is a ton of people with the "this server sux i ddos ur shitty servur" mentality to be going on this server daily sounding like a ton of complete assholes for hours,spamming, and complaining if they wander to the old spawn location. This server's for people who have determination to survive and have fun in a vanilla world, not for a ton of 10 year olds making dicks all over the map and saying stupid shit on Skype to eachother.

It could easily give one who spawns at -2,516 x 331 z in a nice farm made by a previous player an unfair advantage over one who spawns at 53 x 302 z who spawns inside a huge, dark T.N.T. hole next to ocean. They could also spam /kill to go to new locations with less spawn destruction. It'd also make it difficult for two possible players who like servers like this to meet up because of distance and starvation.

If so many people want the spawn to be at 0,0 because of some sedimental reasons, but still wants new players, team up and get some dirt from /world and put it at the spawn. Sitting on your ass and complaining only spreads negativity and motivates nobody. For example, if we had 5 people collaborate with enchanted diamond shovels working together to do this, we could probably have a newly-surfaced 100x100 spawn area with dirt 5 layers deep after around 2 hours of work. Is it really hard getting around 9 stacks of dirt and placing it around the spawn a few times a day to restore spawn?

In my opinion, the lack of tp, kits, the chance of starving to death, and the clear disdain towards whiny noobs is enough to keep most little kids off this server. Remember, a default vanilla world with no extra help is LESS than these little brats expect these days. Most servers coddle you like crazy.
Still, I'd gladly support a move of only a few hundred if the alternative is doing nothing at all.
I think whatever the distance is, it needs to be something memorable. Either a nice round number and 0, or two of the same number. Something like (10,000, 0) or (400, 400).

I think that the spawn should either be moved a pretty decent distance away, or none at all. Moving 500 blocks away from the current spawn would change very little in my opinion. Even some of the worst players can walk that far quite easily, especially with the obsidian roads.
