constant crashes and freezes, lag

What is causing these? Buggy spigot or something else? Yesturday and today same thing started around 00:00 by my time.

Was there a new Minecraft update? In all seriousness, various versions of Minecraft have been unplayable for me, then magically cleared up in a subsequent version. 1.8 is currently in the "unplayable" state; it's never been anything BUT constantly lag/freeze prone. I cannot play with 0.5 fps. Whereas, 1.7.10 was just fine. And 1.7.0 through 1.7.4 (IIRC) were unplayable. Etc etc. I don't know exactly what Mojang is doing, but they keep f*cking with the engine.

Yeah new versions are always unstable. Remember when packed ice was added and it caused the whole server to crash if somebody loaded a packed ice biome? Or how about the first versions of 1.7 where logging in from another location would cause you to duplicate items. I remember back in beta it was standard for Minecraft to crash every 4-12 hours. I never restarted the server because it would just crash and start up on its own. I remember 1.1 (think?, it was early 2012) still crashed every 4-12 hours, but it wouldn't shut down properly (so it could autostart again) it would just hang, so I would have to constantly check the server and manually restart if it had crashed.

We've had problems with every new version, but the problems always get fixed.
