It's a difference of scale. If smaller con stories made national and international headlines more often, I would have listed some. But, if you do look into smaller stories about "con men" and the like, I think you'll find a similar pattern. All it takes to trick someone is a semi-believable story and a calm attitude.

I'd wanted to make my point using examples people would recognize, not a vague claim followed by a wikipedia article or a bunch of links to obscure stories. But if you wanna dig around, be my guest:

I'm not saying Lyser was using foolproof state of the art deception techniques, or that it would have been impossible to see through. I just think people are greatly overestimating the gullibility of Dutdo here, mostly because we all know how untrustworthy Lyser is, and he didn't. If it had been a random player like Dakkadok who had tricked him, would people be laughing as hard?

This is what I mean, a lot of people are acting like this is a huge deal, when it's really just everyday gullibility, combined with not having wasted as much time on a particular gaming server as the rest of us.

I don't think it's a huge deal, I just think he should have checked the claim before acting on it. It's not like him making this post was harmful but believing someone when they say they're an authority just like that is quite a dangerous thing.

It's happened many times before and we've tried to make it clear so people don't do this. He's not an idiot nor does he deserve harsh treatment over something this minor especially considering that he owed up to it instead of persisting or being an asshole. I don't think he's an idiot, seems like an alright guy to me, first time I read it I found it slightly annoying but I was surprised by how he handled it so I respect that. I honestly expected your reply to make this take a turn for the worst but I agree with you now more than I disagree.

Well this is a rare moment on the forums. Multiple people basically agree and don't think everyone else is a complete idiot. Maybe I'll print it out and put it on my fridge.

Naturally on this server I've learned to be very very very very careful, because that's how it is though. People aren't normally on guard 24/7 though, and someone unfamiliar with this server wouldn't understand that they'd need to change their behavior.

People get tricked constantly, look at the news. Remember the big fake rape story recently? Remember the kid who supposedly made $72 million on the stock market, and it turned out he made it up? Remember when Manti Teo got catfished? Remember when Snowden lied to everyone at the NSA and got all their data? Remember when Bush lied about WMDs and torture? Remember a hundred different stories about spies, liars and con men being surprisingly successful?

If you think you're above being deceived, then you're probably easier to trick than you realize. Please try being a bit more self aware and less of a jackass, for the good of yourself and anyone you meet. I'm not going to discuss this anymore. The issue is not that we disagree, it's that you're too dense to understand what I'm saying.
continue to attempt to strawman yourself into being better than you've been made to appear
