Portals: A replacement for the pvp world
Re: Portals: A replacement for the pvp world
I'm planning on having it be two vertical nether portal blocks (without any obsidian.) So generally yes, but I imagine it will be possible to disguise them with enough effort.

Re: Portals: A replacement for the pvp world
Theoretically, couldn't I build a portal at my base, store the portal blocks for the entrance in /world, die, retrieve the blocks from /world and build the entry portal somewhere near spawn and cut the traveling distance so its only a one way trip? All I would have to do after dying is retrieve the same portal blocks from /world, find a good place closer to spawn, build an entrance and take the portal back to my base

No because you wouldn't have portal blocks. What you describe won't be possible.

Well whatever material you would need to make a portal, whether that be a diamond block like you said. Either way couldn't you build one portal at your base far away, send yourself to spawn, then build the entrance and take it back to your base and cut the traveling time by half?
Re: Portals: A replacement for the pvp world
They sound a lot like how nether portals operate without the disincentive of having to run through a long nether tunnel to reach the destination portal. It takes about 30 mins of running while under the effects of speed II potions in the nether to cover about 12500 blocks (100k overworld distance).
Having a hub that players can visit without too much trouble makes it easier to interact. I think that interaction makes the vastness of the overworld feel less isolating. It's not just the safety of having your base remain out of reach, but the convenience of meeting up with someone to effect a trade in a timely manner that makes me appreciate /world. I think if the /world is removed it's going to make it more difficult to interact, especially for someone not rolling in diamond blocks or w/e scarce resource will be required to construct a portal.

you can always live closer to spawn if you want to interact with people nigger, instead of forcing everyone closer together when they complain about being apartMtlGuy wrote:They sound a lot like how nether portals operate without the disincentive of having to run through a long nether tunnel to reach the destination portal. Go ahead and keep mistaking a structural problem for a personal choice, it's very helpful to the discussion.

yes because it's not your personal choice to live too far from everyone to feasibly interact, it's the game's fault

Re: Portals: A replacement for the pvp world
It's not like anyone is forcing you to use these portals should they be implemented anymore than anyone is forced to do /world. I don't think I would be terribly keen on having an instantaneous gateway leading right to my base so I probably wouldn't build one. It would be unfortunate if the /world was scrapped as right now when someone new comes on, I offer them a stack of food and it's just convenient to be able to drop it off in short order. Yeah, I could live closer to spawn, but unless I'm living right next to it, it would still take longer to meet up with a new player than to visit the /world and be all of 300 blocks away from 0/0. It's just easier, and it shows the new guy that there's some nice folks around who want to help.
