Cryptocurrency Implementation

Post by Fluz43 »

This doesn't necessarily need to be added or enforced by Yukar because of the nature of cryptocurrency, but it could come in handy. I see great potential in this if we all carry through with this and implement it in our daily server activities. The idea could also really be a benefit to the server in that there would be every transaction always recorded in the history, always recorded, etc. On top of that, this could be used as a unique server for prospective players, demographics ranging from curious children all the way up to investors looking at real-world implementation of cryptocurrency in the video game sphere, ushering in a new era to SimPVP history where trust isn't needed between players anymore because transactions are non-rescindable.

Implementation
We could use any cryptocurrency which has its standalone blockchain that allows for simple coin creation and distribution. Let's say 100,000 total of these coins are issued (no more can be created but they can be destroyed), valued not in dollars (or maybe they could be) but as basically as the standard currency within the server itself. So, if we did what's called an initial coin offering, one could pay forth to Yukar (or someone sworn to be responsible for coin management unrelated to server affairs) let's say a block of diamonds in return for 50 coins. It's up to the players after successful implementation to decide whether or not those 50 coins are worth a block of diamonds or if they're worth a piece of dirt. Coins are circulated (economy) in exchange for work at what the players value it to be. So, a piece of cooked pork could be worth 5 coins or whatever. Players could in effect hire other players for 1,000 coins to participate in a spawn reconstruction project. A smart contract server lottery system could be implemented to encourage economic spending. Auction off base coords of a player to where whoever pays 5,000 coins gets coords to a player's base. It would not necessarily be a substitute for using diamonds to trade for ender chests, but it could be.

Coding
Coding isn't necessary at all but if it were to be it could significantly improve chances of successful implementation for onlookers to better understand a real-use case for cryptocurrency. For example, a player owns 1,000 coins. They want to send 200 coins to Yukarion. Just type /pay Yukarion 200 and he'll either receive 200 coins or 199.9995 coins (tx fees are integrated in the chain, nothing you can do about it). When the transaction initiates, you get a hash code to view on the blockchain to appear as your receipt which can never ever be deleted or modified. Then, Yukar gets the same receipt and a notification when the block updates with ample confirmations of a successful transaction. If not, payments could still be done through the blockchain and players could manually do this without any administrative intervention, too, on the blockchain these supposed coins would be hosted on, which could be WAVES, Ethereum, NEO, NEM, UBIQ, to name a few.

If and after we successfully implement this program, we could advertise via cryptocurrency forums and gaming sites what we're doing. Don't try to dumb it down too too much so that they think it's a bitcoin-run thing because this isn't supposed to be tied to the dollar. As previously mentioned, it would be tied locally to whatever the players in the server value each coin to be, and, since there's no single currency in Minecraft anyways, it doesn't need to be tied back to that same single currency causing any price inflation at any time.

TL;DR cryptocurrency could turn this server into a pioneer gaming server of what the cryptosphere could see in the future on a much larger scale. It can make everyone in the server fully understand use-cases for cryptocurrency and attract new people to the server who are curious about what this means to demographics ranging from curious 8 year olds to investors who want to see what a real-use case is like.

So first of all, I don't think it'd be worthwhile for us to try to make money doing anything like this. But it could be fun as something to do purely ingame.

I don't think we'd ever add an official server plugin for it.

But, as clip has shown with Cocoaboa, it is possible to simply make bots that effectively become unofficial server commands. And obviously such bots can be added without any admin approval, or even work. Anybody can run a bot. So you could run a bot that manages something like this.
