it's somewhat possible to replicate some of the benefits of easyplacemode. it's without the controversial aspects, but it isn't nearly as good:
placementRestriction - enabled
pickblockLast - BUTTON_2 (right-click)
togglePlacementRestriction - whatever you want, presumably the same button you used to use for easyPlaceToggle
with these settings you can right-click a block and it'll automatically be moved from your inventory and into your hand. it also makes it impossible to place a block in the incorrect position. however, you won't be able to hold the button down for super-fast placement, and you'll have to deal with annoying UI clutter (though this is apparently fixed in the newer versions)
