This song is loved by many especially american idol contestants, but it's all rather cryptic/meaningless as far as i can tell.
Amazing grace,
Grace, being the most appropriate definition, is the love or protection of a god. And amazing being unbelievable. So we have the unbelievable love of god.
How sweet the sound,
This is where it suddenly makes no sense at all. Can the love of god be audible? I asked google but i got nothing but links to audible. com. So if any one can find a link to a recording of what grace sounds like, please post it, as i think hearing this sound may clear things up for me. Carrying on we see this sound has magic powers of some kind.
That saved a wretch like me.
Saved; this is a problem with a lot of religious types. They love saying the've been saved but they never say what they have been saved from, as does this statement. Since it is a sound I can only assume that short of magic it is only cappable of saving a wretch from silence. Also i can hardly relate to this, as i have never thought of myself as wretched.
I once was lost but now am found,
Now here we start a new statement, we may not be talking about sound power any more. Personally any time i've gotten lost i find my own way. This implies that another entity has found the lost person. Who is it? god? a st.bernard? It doesn't specify.
Was blind but now i see.
This is mosly just a lie. Not many blind people regain their sight. This song seems to be singed buy people that have always seen just fine.
In summery I can't relate to this song since i've never been blind, completely lost, a wretch, saved from an unknown, and i've never heard this mysterious sound that that is generated by the unbelievable love of god.
Amazing grace?

Re: Amazing grace?
Ok can I just put my own spin on this?
Amazing grace;
This could be a synonym for a lot of things, maybe even just an emotion or person.
How sweet the sound;
Almost definately a metaphor for beauty or peace.
That saved a wretch like me;
That helped him to turn his life around/ he was ruining his life but this beauty, or maybe even his own faith, has helped him take the right paths
I once was lost but now am found;
Again, a phylisophical cliche often used to describe a person finding himself where he once was lost in the burdens of his life.
Was blind but now I see;
Again this is not based on its actuall grammatical meaning but on the basis that he now sees the world and its people for what they really are.
"I hold the world but as the world; a stage where every man must play his part"
The merchant of Venice, act 1 scene 1 Antonio.
