That is sort of the point, you have to login and move closer to the center (or just stay there) to not die when logging in. It could maybe teleport you to the current border edge too with a plugin too I guess.

That's just dumb If I loose all my shit because I couldn't be on at every waking hour of the day, and now I'm either stuck outside a border, dead, or all my shit is unreachable five blocks from me.
