I think hardcore usually means deathban, as in hardcore mode on singleplayer. Our main server isn't hardcore. We had one for a bit, but nobody really played there, and I don't know if it's still up or not.

In what world does a spawner grinder take a couple hours to set up? Even if you have to gather the materials, you can have one running in well under 30 minutes if you have done it before.

Meh, depends on how many "features" it has. At our base we set up a double-skele with a quickpulse lava softener and a mass storage sorter system. You could also add indicator lights, different "modes", a safety mechanism, and decorate it nicely. But even all of that wouldn't take more than a couple hours. In what world does a spawner grinder take a couple hours to set up? I prefer the Grind-O-Matic 76. It slices, it blends, it makes great heaping piles of steaming mobby goodness!

To me this sounds like it will replace mob farms with grinding by killing mobs. I don't see the difference, grinding in any way sucks, and there's no way to solve that but to completely rework the enchantment and xp system.
Grinding shouldn't be necessary in the game at all. Grinding is having to work to be able to play the game. It's a stupid and unnecessary part of any game. I think mob farms at least somewhat solve the problem of grinding, as mob farms allow us to AFK.

I guess, depends on what you mean by "grinding". Mining is pretty "grind-like"and can get boring but I don't see it as a problem. I don't think some kind of "auto-mining" device that would gather resources for you while you're afk would make the game better.

I don't give two craps if you guys nerf the grinders. I use a much more efficient cow grinder. I just have a giant farm of wheat which usually yields about 6 stacks of wheat from a 2/3s harvest (i've never had a full harvest yet) and then i run over to my cow farm of about 500 cows cramped into a 25x25 (even though its a little wench to open the fence gates when 10 cows pour out immediately) and just breed them repeatedly until there's another 250 squirming little mustachioed craps. That usually gets me to level 30 or more.

any part of this game after the initial "find wood and two pieces of food" is grinding.
