For example, If I want to live out 40K blocks in one direction, I can either A) Make a railway system 40,000 meters long, which would take 2500 sets of rails, with 6 iron per rail, would mean I would need 15,000 ingots of iron, or about 1666 blocks of iron, which is 26.04 stacks of iron blocks. Now, if we take the power rails out of that, which assuming we did one rail every 30 regular rails, which means I need about 1400 powerd rails, which means I would need 38600 regular rails plus 1400 powered rails. This means I need 234 ingots of gold, Which equals 3.645 stacks of gold. Calculating the new cost of iron, I need 14,475 ingots of iron, which is 25.13 stacks of iron blocks. Our resource total for traveling by minecart from X: 40,000 ; Y: 5 ; Z: 0 to X: 0 ; Y: 5 ; Z: 0 comes out to 26 stacks of gold ingots and 25.13 stacks of iron blocks. Even traveling by the nether, which is 1/8 the distance, comes out to 3.25 stacks of gold ingots and 3.14125 stacks of iron blocks.
Or I can B) walk there and become a fatass on the way.

Or use a minimap and about 10 pieces of plank for a boat (one reserve for that fucking lilypad mine) and travel by water.

Still, boats don't even travel at 8 m/s, they require attention to turn and avoid landmasses and obsticals, and there's no garuntee that there is a straight path through the water. A minecart you can get in, launch off, and then leave your computer for a while. Assuming you travel at 8 m/s the entire time, you'll be at spawn in 5000 seconds, which is 83 minutes and 20 seconds, or One hour, 23 minutes, and 20 seconds. Traveling by the nether, that's 625 seconds, which is 10 minutes and 25 seconds.
You see, getting to spawn would still take 10 minutes using the fastest method possible.

Damn. That's a lot of math. That's probably why most people who are past the limit aren't even half that distance.

who in their right mind would build such a long track in the over world? Also Box may have meant making a boat route not sailing on the open ocean. Quick thought on combat tp; perhaps a proximity feature could be used so there's no tp within, say, 100 blocks of another player. Also just /spawn would still leave a sort of peanalty to live far away, as any loot you intend to bring home needs to be taken on foot through dangerous terrain. Or if you have a road way of some kind to handle the travel you run the risk of leading people right to your door if they find the line. It seems no one is in favor of 2-way tp, am i right?

Well, the gates don't have the problem with "combat teleporting". If someone (stupidly) teleports away from someone using a gate, their pursuer can just follow them through the portal.

Yes, two way tp is a definite nono.

Even with the set positions? I thought people liked that idea. It would make more hubs then just the spawn.

Well, eh. I wouldn't have a problem if they were a large distance apart, but eh.

I like the idea of either one-way portals to spawn, or just a /spawn tp command....with the addition rev's suggestions of not being able to use it within 100 blocks of another player. I think there is a definite possibility of increased PVP this way.
I know for a fact i would PVP a lot more if this were to happen. It would make it way easier to get your equipment out into the pvp area.
