Not really sure what it counts for, but I remember walking a ridiculous distance without the nether last year. I think it ended up being 100-200k, but I'm not entirely certain.

When Boats Worked(tm), 100k was easy.

Hell, given a nether portal at spawn, and a couple trees, I could probably go 100k in a few hours. Of course, that was back When Shift-Build Worked(tm).
