Problem solved and server is running again.
An update to bind-chroot had broken bind (which minecraft needs to authenticate users, apparently.) Creating a link from the bind-chroot configuration file to the real one fixed the problem.

Both simpvp.net and hc.simpvp.net seem to be down for me. Also the domain for hc.simpvp.net seems to be expired.

its the simpvp.net domain thats down.. u can still reach the hc server on mplayer.se
