I understand that it may be confusing to a Non-Native, but if you grew up using these units, they are pretty easy to remember. Also, I haven't seen Americans use yards to miles so much as feet to miles (that being 5280 feet per mile). Also, I have trouble thinking in Metric units. It's not the converting (that's simple, of course...), it's putting it in units I can think of. Tell me about an object being 10 km wide and I'll sort of understand the length, but if you instead said "it's about 6 miles" I'd understand completely. We do, however, almost universally use metric in scientific ventures. Again, not just because of the conversions, but things like Volts or other complicated units are represented in metric.

Canada is "officially" metric. But having grown up here, the reality is that we measure:

* height and weight in feet+inches and pounds
* food in the store in kilos and liquid in mL
* speed in km/h
* recipes in tsp, tbsp, and cups
* temperature in Celsius
* beer in pints (nobody says, "hey, want to go grab 0.47 litres at the bar?")

Most school children can convert between Celsius and Farenheit, kilos and pounds, and miles and km, because otherwise nothing coming from the USA makes any goddamn sense.
