Server Restarts

Post by Cinnabars »

I think recently someone said something about automatic server restarts. Could this be considered as an option to reduce lag?

Another option could possibly be to have some type of vote to restart command, or some way for non-opped players to restart the server when it's needed.

What does everyone else think of this?

I think this would be a good thing to try out. I've thought about it and an automatic restart is fine with me as long as there's a warning, and as Yukar has said elsewhere, some kind of auto-log-back-in mod would probably be approved so you could still AFK farm.

I think that a vote to restart might be frustrating, like say if one person is AFK and misses the vote, or refuses to vote just to be a dick, or constantly starts a vote to bother people. I would rate it as possibly somewhat abusable/10.

I am definitely in favor of automatic restarts though.

The way that vote restart could work is:

1) it would need to be a unanimous vote. This prevents teams from restarting against someones will.
2) no one would see that a vote is happening, it's just silent in the background, entirely player driven (i.e. asking everyone to type /voterestart)(this would prevent server messages from getting spammed)
3) there would be a limit to how often this could be done. Once every 2 hours for example.

The worse the lag gets, the easier it is for 1 player to restart the server. The server tends to kick everyone when lag gets super bad, so then you relog, quickly type it, and it's good to go again. This player doesn't really have too much ability to abuse this if there is a restart time limit.

This obviously has flaws but it would prevent lagging players from having to wait 6 hours for an automatic restart.

I would also be totally in favor of auto-restarts. Once every 4-8 hours would be good IMO. Auto-restarts would be pretty fucking difficult to abuse.

What about having a list of special "trusted" users who are regulars on the server, picked by the admins, that have this power, and if they ever abused it would have it taken from them. Vote restarts with limitations are good as well as auto-restarts on a schedule. I really don't care which it is, but one of these would be awesome.

so you mean minimods

which frankly would have been a good idea from day one, but given minecraft's "you're either an almost all-powerful operator or an all-powerful root admin", it's difficult to implement.
