Easy way to increase community

Post by bloodlucky »

I think there's a pretty reasonable solution to our low player base and we've been staring at the solution the entire time. It's to vote for the server. I admit that I haven't been doing it lately but if we all vote on at least one link every day I think we could see significant improvements. I think I remember seeing an incredibly low number for the total votes received per month on this server. If everyone who came on the server each day voted on at least one link we could probably get a huge increase in total players. Of course this means there would be more noobs, but regardless the voting would help to increase the minority of skilled players that are filtered out from the newbies. Like the net increase or whatever

OH MY GOD WHAT AN AWESOME IDEA WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE CAME UP WITH THIS SOLUTION BEFORE THIS THREAD IS THE RENEWAL OF SIMPVP WE WILL BE THE FIRST SERVER OF MINECRAFT SOON NOW

No seriously this needs a thread ? Another one ? Just to talk us into voting ?

If you want the server to grow fucking play on it and bring your friends ( that might be an issue for some people I admit ), don't try to compete with a zillion other factions servers paying players to spam a vote button all to get 548th place and a few more lost noobs per week.

Personal note and kind-of serious reply : I don't vote, I'm too fucking lazy to go and find the page explaining how and where to vote. If it was on the front page near the logo or some shit, had some pleasing visual and required just a few straightforward and no-brain-required steps not only would I vote every time I go to the forum, but I bet almost anyone would. Used this technique on my former server, we managed to get 5th of all categories with hundreds of votes per month. Until someone did shady things with the ranking website and managed to get us kicked out.

In general giving the website a bit of love ( a nice phpBB theme, a simple visual identity, a seamless integration with the wiki etc ) would likely boost player's interest, both new and old.

Eh, if you go to simpvp.net on the frontpage there's a link titled "vote for us", click that and it'll take you to a simple list of servers. If you're ingame, just type /vote for some text about why you should vote and then a link to where to do it. Also you can go to simpvp.net/vote to automatically open all the server list pages without having to do any work. Sorry, I'm curious, what exactly could we do to possibly streamline this any further?

You're right, we could use a theme other than the standard phpbb one. I'm not sure what you mean by seamless integration with the wiki though, what's missing there?

this kind of stuff:
Image
I never check the main website, i go straight to the forum to check it, and i'm probably not only the only one
when I'm ingame I don't want to open my browser and go through the hassle of changing activity, unlike when I'm checking the forum it's no big deal to click a vote button if it's under my mouse in the front page

I think that to be efficient the voting process has to be an absolute no brainer : fancy button on website header catching visitor's eye attention, leading to the only one voting website immediately, and 2 clicks later it's done you voted and feelt pleased to help. People don't really want to have to remember to vote and take the habit, you have to present them the thing when they just check arround and if it's not too involving they might do it, and even do it on a regular basis.

TL;DR : Don't involve people, don't beg them, just show them a pretty button leading to a simple voting page

So basically you just want a link from the forum to the voting list?

Well you can clearly tell the idea has been followed by the single-digit total of votes each month

I guess I worded the title poorly. I'm not proposing voting as a new idea, but more raising a question as to why we've given up on it. After all, everyone's concern is towards increasing the playerbase

I don't know about you but I vote directly from the server. Takes about 30 seconds per vote

I think a link to the voting page should be part of the text it shows when you log onto the server. It would be a good reminder and let people know that voting is possible who don't know yet.

Obviously I am opposed to any kind of benefits for voting or coercing new players into voting in any way. I just think a reminder would help us get our vote rate up, because I honestly just forget a lot.

I assure you like every sign at spawn and other log-in messages that appear it will be dutifully ignored

if people want to vote they will, and generally they only vote if there's something immediately in it for them (and not a long-term conceptual thing like "increased playerbase" that may or may not happen)
