serious minecraft linux help needed

ever since and update for java 7 came through the software updater, minecraft can't use java. In all areas to select a program to run with, java is not listed. I tried to uninstall reinstall java but i don't think it worked since when i reinstall it doesn't say any bit about downloading and just says applying changes and it's done. So it seems to me the bad java is lingering in the computer some where. Ive searched the internet and found nothing that worked or that was understandable. If i can't run minecraft i'm pretty screwed about the whole simpsons house thing i'm trying to get done. If anyone has any clue, wtf is going on and how to get around it please let me know.

well after saving all my stuff on a cloud and reinstalling the whole OS and putting everything back where it was java was still unusable after i installed it. But i found a page about installing oracle java and that seems good.
