Spawn protection

Post by leofanx »

Just throwing it out there, would it be possible to bring back the spawn protection like it was a few months ago? It used to extend as far as the (now gone) 4 bridges facing each direction if I recall correctly? It was the only place you could be in the server where you could commute/trade with other players without fear of being killed/backstabbed. Plus killing noobs at spawn over and over is just mean :P Opinions/inputs, welcome!

It was removed to prevent people from abusing it, people would spend far too much time inside spawn, hoarding items instead of playing for them, they were basically just getting too annoying. You can still do trades, just get a diamond sword and some food on your bar, the people who try to kill you, will just end up getting killed. noobs have the small 20x20 area inside spawn in which they are protected from experienced players, it's their choice if they decide to leave that area.

Personally I'd prefer to keep it the way it is now, but of course if you can find support for it I'll be more than happy to add it back again.

One would be foolish to go to spawn without armor; of course I was equipped. I hadn't anticipated someone coming at me with 500 arrows versus my diamond sword though. So the trade lead to me disconnecting as to not lose all the stuff I had brought with me. Even if I had managed to kill said enemies, they would respawn near me and chase me down with their "I have nothing to lose!" mentality. Another instance, when I came to spawn to trade ( I brought a bow and arrows this time), 2 guys with absolutely nothing kept coming at me, all they would do is respawn and chase me down, slowly grinding my armor and food away, while I waste my arrows trying to keep them at bay. When someone at spawn would connect, they'd tell them to chase me by saying "leo has a bunch of shit on him, get him!", so I'd have 2, 3, 4, 5 players chasing me down. They didn't give a shit; they had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I have a different suggestion then: How about we do a small Trading Post? It could have the same protection area as the spawn area: 20x20 or something like that? Opinions/inputs are welcome :)

If you want to trade, there are a few options. One option is to choose a custom location like (+200,+200). There will be much less people bothering you. Another option is the netherside of the spawn, which is still pvp protected. It's small, but it's enough.

As said the amount of n00bs and twelve year olds populating the spawn was just too much. There were times when approximately 50% of the players online was just camping the spawn. You don't want that either, because then people will just try to steal the items when you drop them for the other player.

The 'I have nothing to lose' mentality is a problem. I've thought of adding deathban, which would remove the problem, but also remove the vanilla-feeling of the server. I might add some timer to spawn, something like it takes 2 minutes to get out of spawn or something, but I don't know how I would do that, and it could potentially deter new players from staying.

I'll only trade with someone on non-pvpable grounds, so +200, +200 wouldn't work for me. I do however, like your nether idea, I had forgotten that a small portion of it was protected.

That's not a bad idea, 2 minutes is a bit long though. I think 1 minute would be sufficient; if you know he's going to chase you after you kill him, 1 minute is ample time to go out of his line of sight. That being said though, I still prefer my idea of a Trading Post. Thanks for your input guys :)

Sidenote: I used to enjoy going to spawn to bring wood and trivial start-off tools to the new players. It would insinuate a warm welcome and players generally enjoyed it. "People are nice here, I'm gonna stick around". Now that spawn is all pvp except those small 20 blocks, the atmosphere out of those 20 blocks is instantaneously hostile. That place of welcome is gone. On one hand, a few noobs with nothing to lose can chase a player with iron armor and a diamond sword down and slowly grind him. On the other hand, one armor stacked player and a diamond sword can prevent one noob from ever reaching 10 blocks from spawn, killing him over, and over again, eventually resulting in the player quitting. I understand that hoarding was an issue, but I find this to be one as well. I'm seeking a happy middle.

I completely %100 agree with you. It's gotten way to out of hand with this. I just keep disconecting because my diamond sword is of course no match for fists. They are somehow 10x more powerful. We need the old spawn back right now. I honestly might just not play on this server anymore if we cant get this problem solved soon.

fists with infinite respawns. Your diamond sword may kick his ass if you're able enough, but he'll grind you down eventually. You have everything to lose, he has everything to gain. You'll die and lose your items, just, slowly and relentlessly.

I raped people at spawn today. I didn't bring any armor or anything, I just chased down. I managed to make 3 people quit/disconnect. I'm not proud of it, but I wanted proof of concept, which I got, in .avi :)

I don't see the problem with the spawn, you can still easily do trades, in fact it's much easier because there aren't people inside spawn bothering you anymore.

The noobs repeatedly respawning is annoying, but it's not hard keeping them back. You have to really be a bad fighter to get killed by unarmed noobs.

If somebody with a diamond sword is standing right by the exit of spawn, go to the other end and walk out there. There are 160 different blocks you can choose to walk out through, you have to be really stupid to choose the one with a diamond sword guy standing on the other side.
