i think i need a new hard drive

i'm currently running my os off the disk my comp won't boot or take an install but since all systems seem fine running off the system disk i can only guess the hard drive is dead. any ideas? how i might test it? fix it? blow it up?

well it seems i finnaly got an install to take but i have my doubts

I'm not a computer nerd and I barely even understand the concept of RAM but my opinion is find a good simple new desktop that works well with a bigger memory and transfer all your data over into it. I got my laptop that has a triple core and blu-ray player inside it with premium AMD graphics for only about $600.
