Hello, this is ostrich1414, and today I will be discussing the etymology and pronunciation of the word "Quinsigamond".
Many people ask me, "ostrich, what the fuck is a Quin...quinsi...quasi...whatever, what is it? How the fuck do you pronounce it? Is this just a troll my inferior IQ can hardly process?", and to that I say, no, it is not. It has been roughly a year-and-a-half since the inception of my first major build, Quinsigamond, and thus I feel it is time I discuss what the fuck it means, and how one pronounces it.
Pronunciation
This is exactly how you pronounce Quinsigamond:
QUIN-SIG-A-MOND (kwin-sig-uh-mänd)
Most people, however, call it "Quinsi" for short, and this is how you pronounce that:
QUIN-SEE (Just like the name "Quincy")
Etymology
To be completely honest, I named the city "Quinsigamond" for two major reasons: one, I wanted to name a city something weird as fuck that was difficult to pronounce on purpose to confuse people, and two, the SimPvP Wiki lacked any bases that began with the letter "Q". So I killed two birds with one stone.
However, "Quinsigamond" is not a made-up, fictional word. It is actually a Native American word, derived from the Algonquin language, translating to "the pickerel fishing place" (pickerel is a type of fish found in freshwater lakes). More on the subject can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinsigamond
As a Massachusetts native, I have long been exposed to Native American words and phrases, as many of our towns and natural formations are named using them. Thus, "Quinsigamond" is the name of a real-life place, namely Lake Quinsigamond on the Worcester-Shrewsbury line in Central Mass. There is also a nearby school named after it, Quinsigamond Community College.
So, as you can see, "Quinsigamond" is a real place and thus a real word, but nonetheless obnoxiously difficult to pronounce.
